  1. Add Apr. 6, 1974 Toledo Sports Arena to the list
    Here's the ticket stub...
    http://www.beatlesource.com/chazz/worm/bio/70s/nugentT.jpg

I'm also certain I saw them at The Toledo Sports Arena in 1973 but don't know the exact date. It was a "Call of the Wild" show.

  3. I saw the Amboy Dukes perform in Ann Arbor in the spring of 1970, at a place called "The Big Steele Ballroom". It was on South Main Street in Ann Arbor, across from the old "Fox Tent and Awning Store" It was just the upstairs floor of a converted warehouse, and did not last very long as a concert venue. Later, that same warehouse was converted again, remodeled extensively and became the second location for the Ann Arbor "Ark" folk music club. Anyways, the Amboy Dukes rocked...I still vividly recall the Dukes performing "Migration" there....and Ted's hug stacks of amps.

  5. Venue info for July 4 1969
I worked for Mike Quatro the promoter at Pottawatamie Beach, Saugatuck - 2nd Annual Saugatuck Pop Festival, drove equipment truck, worked lights, backstage set changes.
The Dukes played Friday 7/4/1969 in the following fantastic line-up.
SRC, Procol Harum, MC5, Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker, The Amboy Dukes, The Rotary Connection.
    7/5/1969
The Crazy World of Arthur Brown, The Bob Seger System, The Frost, The Stooges, Big Momma Thornton, Savage Grace, The Red, White & Blues Band, The Frut of the Loom, Brownsville Station
Although my memory is a bit hazy, 43 years ago, I believe some of the dukes stuck around for Saturdays lineup. Friday was very hot 90's with stormy night cooling to the 70's Saturday.
Motor cycle groups were trying to break down the fence, we made agreement with the largest cycle group there(Scorpions from Detroit), that they could camp inside fence---IF they guarded fence and kept the perimiter secured
Ted Nugent raised his family and lived a short distance from me in Michigan for decades.

  7. Okay, I remember seeing Ted and the Dukes perform on the steps of the Detroit Public Library, mid-August, 1969. I was scheduled to go into the US Army (drafted) on August 22, 1969, and went to this free show as a last "fling." Met some SDS (Students for a Democratic Society) organizers at the show and then went to an SDS meeting the next night at a church up Woodward from where the concert was.

  9. Great research, Bruno. I recall the Dukes headlining an outdoor festival near Louisville Kentucky over the MC5 and a host of others sometime around late April 1971. In contrast to Ted in his buckskins, Johhny Angelos was in mod suit and shag haircut, prancing like Rod Stewart.

  11. Hey Pete!! Great web site, man. My band used to open for the "Dukes" at a bunch of Indiana venues back in the early 70s. I could send you the dates and venues if you'd like. I also have some great photos I could send from the same timeframe. Used to hang out with Ted quite a bit back in the day. Let me know.

  12. Just an FYI- Wayne Kramer was a no-show at the Dukes/Cactus show 4/21/74. I was dead center leaning on the stage. Unfortunately, NONE of my photos turned out. Mike Pinera mugged for me, too! ;)

  13. I have an old promotional poster for a festival called "The Big One" at Sherwood Forest in Davison, Michigan. The date on the poster says Wednesday, August 2nd. There is no year on the poster, but a look at some calendars suggests that it's from 1972. There are a number of bands listed on the poster, with Ted Nugent and the Amboy Dukes listed at the top. 14. I also have another promotional gig poster for a show on April 21, 1973 at the Hemmens Auditorium in Elgin, Illinois. It is billed as Ted Nugent and the Amboy Dukes. (with another band called Sea Daddy).

  15. Some time in in the first half of April, 1974, my dad drove 3 friends and I to the Allen Park Civic Arena to see Nugent in another of his "guitar battles" (I saw another one with Mahogany Rush that was awesome). It was a little downriver skating/hockey arena at Southfield Rd & Roosevelt. We all ended up ostage at the end, and I shook hands with Pinera. When we returned to the car dad told me an Allen Park police officer he met outside was related to us.

    1. Thanks psubliminal! Anyway, you remember if actually The Amboy Dukes played that day, or it was just Ted Nugent alone for his "guitar battles"?

    2. I was at that Allen Park show. I don't recall Cactus as the support band, but it could have been. Also caught Mahogany Rush at the Michigan Palace that year, too. Frank Marino is a guitar god of the first order.

    2. yes I was probably 15 at that show--got to go because my buddys sister dated a guy in the local band that opened--became a big ted nugent fan--saw ted nugent and the amboy dukes june 1974 in a trio with rob grange and vic mastriani at kilcawley hall on the campus of Youngstown state and maybe 6 months later at the tomorrow club(later the Youngstown agora) - same line up but Derek st holmes in band--loved the fact they played the ballad 'sasha'--great memoriies

    3. thanks again! I added the June 1974 gig although I didn't not find the exact date (damn! hahaha). The other gig at the Tomorrow Club was on November 3, 1974. By that time the band was from time to time still wrongly billed as "Amboy Dukes" although they had already added Derek on the lineup and had already changed their name to The Ted Nugent Band.

  19. The Park, North Baltimore, Ohio in the summer of 1971...MC5, Amboy Dukes, Bob Seger, Teagarden and Van Winkle, Catfish(Hodge), Brownsville Station, and others(a long time ago). The Park opened July 10, 1971 and September was too late as Parliament Funkadelic were not on the bill. Good luck ferreting out the date...that's as close as I can get you.

  21. There is currently a rare handbill by Bill Narum on eBay for Amboy Dukes’ “First Texas Appearance" at Of Our Own in Houston. The date shown is November 22. Does anyone know whether the concert happened and, if so, what year? The venue was reportedly open from 1970 to 1971 or 1972. The auction is at http://ebay.to/1WN99Iu, and there is an image of the handbill at http://bit.ly/narum-amboydukes. Thanks!

  23. In 1971 I was a second rate drummer, in and out of bands in and around Dearborn, Michigan that (with the exception of one gig) never got out of someone's basement. I was taught how to play by a local drummer that I went to school with who was (and is) a couple years older than me. His name is Keith Johnstone. At some point in 1970 a few local musicians (including John Angelos) hooked up with Bill "Mom" White when he returned from Viet Nam, and after he was replaced in the Amboy Dukes. Long story short, one day as I was hanging around one of the many hippy houses I'd frequent, I told Bill White that I'd heard that Ted was looking for a new band. It was a lie. I was apparently trying to make conversation, I don't actually remember after all these years LOL. Well, the next thing I know, Bill was calling Nugent! I shat myself as I had made it all up!
But low and behold, Ted really was looking for a new band, and as both Bill and my friend Keith Johnstone were already in a band together, they jumped ship and after a jam session at a friend's house in Inkster, got the gig. And since I was a drummer, I ended up being hired as Keith's drum tech! And even though they both got sacked within months (as did the late vocalist Dave Gilbert) it kick started my career as a roadie, and after 5-6 years of setting up drums for various local acts, I moved to Los Angeles and became a stage lighting designer/director for 32 years until my retirement in 2014.

And I should mention that I ended up being a lifelong friend of Ted's as well as touring with him in the mid to late 1970s as well as in the 90's (with Damn Yankees) and then for 5 more years starting in 1999. I was also around when John Angelos and Joe Vitale were in the band and actually have two demo tracks recorded in 1972 at Criteria Studios in Florida (with John, Rob Grange, and Vitale that are awesome. One song actually features flute!
That version of the Dukes was really an excellent band. Angelos was an excellent singer and song writer (not to mention harmonica player) when Ted wasn't. Sadly, John never really liked Ted, and he left soon after joining, and then he killed himself in 1984. I should mention that John Angeles was a neighbor growing up, and the "local star" when I was still in grade school. I also ended up touring with Joe Vitale again in the 90s when he and I both worked for Dan Fogelberg (until Dan's death in 2007) as well as CSN until 2009. It was he who sent me the old recordings 10 years ago. Sorry about the long story, but you blog jogged my memories..

  26. I am darned near positive that I saw Ted with the Dukes at an ice rink or NG armory in South Detroit (like in Allen Park or Lincoln Park) in the summer of '74. I think Styx may have been the support band, but not sure of that. I distinctly recall Ted's huge stacks of Fender tweeds amps at that show. Also saw him at the Michigan Palace with Wayne Kramer ("Kramer's Kreemers") and Cactus in April '74, and again in Nov '74 with Freddy King.

  28. I can't find any evidence online, but I saw TN&AD with a rare lineup of Vic Mastrianni, Rob Grange, Derek St Holmes and Nugent. St. Holmes was new and played the whole set, and they did Papa's Will as well as a new song Stranglehold. Definitely transitioning to the new "Nugent" era. It was winter of 74 at the cafeteria of College of Lake County in Grayslake IL with Zazu opening. It was a small crowd, probably not more than 300-400 people packed into the cafeteria, a small PA.

    2. I was there at the CLC show also with Zazu opening and St Holmes singing Stranglehold. I had seen the Amboy Dukes earlier 1974 at Ozark Music Festival and St Holmes wasn't with them, I think winter 74 means Nov/Dec late in the year, it was cold out

    3. Ha! That makes 3 of us -- I was there too. As I recall, we were all sitting on the floor at their feet. I remember at the end, Ted just walked off with his guitar leaning on the amp, and feeding back at a monumentally loud level. My ears were ringing for 24 hours. I'm surprised we didn't all get ear damage. I later bought the Zazu album; it was pretty good.

  29. Enjoyed stumbling across your blog while reading about one of my favorite Detroit-area 60s bands, The Amboy Dukes. Perusing the list of appearances has helped refresh my memory and pinpoint a couple of times that I saw them, but didn't remember the dates, and in some instances, who was on the bill with them.

One very memorable show is listed, but without the supporting act that night. I remember the year and the venue, but not the exact date. Since there is only one entry that matches this partial information, it is likely the show that I attended with my college roommate.

You have it listed as May 20th, 1970 at the Agora Ballroom, Columbus, Ohio. The year and venue are definitely correct -- it was a memorable show that I've written about to friends on more than one occasion, including a hand-written account that I stumbled across just a few years ago.

The opening act was a band I'd never before heard of, fronted by a guitarist with whom I was also unfamiliar: Glass Harp, featuring Phil Keaggy. It was a great introduction to an outstanding guitarist who would go on to renown and acclaim in the area of Christian music in subsequent years.

Nice job on the blog! I'll have to poke around in there and see what else I can find!

  32. November 22, 1973 Ted Nugent & the Amboy Dukes & Mahogany Rush at Michigan Palace. This show was probably where Ted or his management came up with the "guitar battle" thing. The Dukes played, then Mahogany Rush. While Frank Marino was playing, Nugent's roadies started wheeling his amp on stage and Ted & Frank started trading solos.Marino won, hands down! This story has been published on Frank Marino's web site. A friend was at the show and still has his ticket stub.

As to the Allen park show, it was August 3, 1974 and it was Ted vs. Mike Pinera, who was fronting a "new" version of Cactus (I was a huge fan of the "old" Cactus with Jimmy McCarty on guitar). Cactus went first, then Nugent & the Dukes; at the end of his set Ted yelled "Where's that fucker Pinera?" and they "battled." I think Ted won that round, though Pinera was no slouch that night. Here's a link to the showbill: https://theconcertdatabase.com/sites/theconcertdatabase.com/files/1974-08-03apa.jpg

  36. Great article!
I first saw Ted, Rob, Joe Vitali and John Angelos at Ella Sharp Park in Jackson Michigan.
It was an Awesome show "Children of Papa's Will" had Ted's kid on his shoulders.
I saw Ted, Rob and KJ at St John's in Jackson
    and
Ted Rob and Vic at St Johns in Jackson
I saw 5 minutes of Ted's Show at Hanover Horton before he pulled out because he needed more baby sitting money. I agree, Parents were dropping off 10 and 12 years olds at a rock concert.
I saw Ted, Rob, Vic and Danny Gore at the Lake Odessa Show. The MC5 were there also wearing the Berets that got in France.
By the spring of 73, my drummer quit my band and auditioned but was kicked off the farm for being a fool.
Also, in 68 or 69 the Amboy Dukes played the Hullabaloo Club off Prospect street, of which I missed.

I once saw TN and what l thought was billed as the Original Amboy Dukes (not sure now) - Summertime around 1972 (+/- a year or so) "way up in No. Wisconsin" near the native people's reservation. I believe it was in a County park. It started to rain as they were about to go on so the moved everything into a shelter house about 20' x 40' or so.

Everyone crammed in and Ted and the gang almost blew the doors off the place!

    A real treat!

I don't remember where I download this, but here are the comments that where included:

The earliest known AMBOY DUKES show I've ever seen. I got this in a trade with a
guy in the Washington, DC area in the late 70's. The tape has flaws, some gaps,
microphone connection problems, etc., but certainly listenable sound quality. I was
astounded to know that the great drummer Joe Vitale was actually an AMBOY DUKE
for a short period of time before going on to Joe Walsh, Dan Fogelberg (R.I.P.), and many
others! The band has lots of technical issues during the show, and complain a lot for
the house lights to be turned down. In this show they were in the middle slot between
headliners EDGAR WINTER'S WHITE TRASH, and the openers THE CHERRY PEOPLE.
Before anybody asks, I only have the AMBOY DUKES portion of the show. The band is
denied an encore, despite cries for one, since they ran over their allotted time! If anybody
can help with the exact date, band personnel, song titles, and other information, PLEASE
feel free to do so. If nothing else, this tape is an interesting listen for the rare unknown
    songs and line up. Enjoy!
