Boston Tea Party, Boston, MA: Shows List 1967-1970

This shows list is the work of Bruno Ceriotti. Help in putting this together has been provided by Greg Vick, Folkrelic, and Ross Hannan, to whom I'm most grateful.

The Boston Tea Party, one of the most famous sixties rock venue in the world, opened on Friday January 20, 1967 in an abandoned temple at 53 Berkeley Street. Two years after (July 12, 1969) the club had moved to an old warehouse on 15 Landsdowne Street (it was originally a club called The Ark which failed a few days earlier as the Tea Party was looking for a bigger place and they took it over). The club closed on December 29, 1970.

  1. The last show held at the original Boston Tea Party location at 53 Berkeley Street was on 7/11/69 (The Velvet Underground, Country Funk, and Quill).

The next night (7/12/69), Larry Coryell, Country Funk, and Quill opened the "new" Boston Tea Party located behind Fenway Park's center field at 15 Lansdowne Street (formerly The Ark, which merged with the Boston Tea Party).

18 April 1968: Blue Cheer replaced BB King.
June 13-15, 1968: You can delete “The American Revolution” it is simply descriptive.
July 14-16, 1969: Procol Harum, Blodwyn Pig - This is a 1970 date not 1969.
October 2-4, 1969: Grateful Dead, Bonzo Dog Band, Doc Watson - I am not so sure that Doc Watson played.

  9. I saw Velvet Underground 3 or 4 times at the Berkeley St. venue, plus lots of other acts including Bonzo Dog Band. We used to sit in the balcony and watch them do the light show. Boston Police detectives would show up and look for runaways (so I was told). The Devil's Disciples motorcycle gang would show up sometimes but they never bothered anyone. Don Law was the manager and my friend Debbie Chase worked there, so I got in free!

  10. June 5-7, 1969: Delaney, Bonnie and Friends (sans Eric Clapton) / Serfs
Clapton joined D&B&F on July 18 in Toronto according to Bobby Whitlock (Winter 2000 interview by Mitch Lopate http://swampland.com/articles/view/title:bobby_whitlock)

    1. you are right about the June 1969, not my fault, I take the gig list from another source and I did not double check it. Anyway, Clapton (with Blind Faith) just shared the bill with D&B&F at the Electric Circus in Toronto on July 18, but he actually joined them only later on November 9, 1969.

  11. The Move did not make it to Boston Sept. 25-27, 1969. J. Geils Blues Band opened the show I attended. Lonnie Mack headlined. Having seen The Move in London summer 1967, I was sorely disappointed

  18. Great site! Do you recall the Berkeley Street Blues Club that opened for one night in Boston circa 1970 with Buddy Guy and Big Momma Thornton? Ron Vanderbilt promoted the show and opened the club which got closed down by the city after just one night. The show was by invitation only. Thanks for any ideas you may have!
