  4. Hi Bruno,
In my IS interviewing I got this from a guy in Missoula.

"They came back to Montana in ’68 or ’69 I think. It must have been ’69 actually ‘cause it was after Woodstock. Anyway, they were touring with Canned Heat and came to play at the University, at the University Field House. They had this huge, huge sound system, and they were REALLY, REALLY loud. It was crazy. I was with this girl and we got cigarette butts and wetted them down and stuck them in our ears so we could watch. When Canned Heat came out after they turned it way down!"

Guys in the band also mention touring with Canned Heat right before breaking up. Seems like their last show in SF was at the end of March '69 so the "tour" could have been after that. ?

  5. Hello,
This is a wonderful piece of scholarship.
    A few points:-
I've always assumed that the date on 'Jamming' With Kaleidoscope' of June 29th 1970 must be wrong because it sounds like Larry Taylor on the bass (check out the bass solo on 'Refried Boogie' and there are some familiar Larry Taylor-style phrases) and he's even credited on in the CD booklet. In June 1970 he was in John Mayall's band. Also Henry Vestine's guitar-playing sounds very 1968-9, AND they play 'I'm Her Man' fronm 'Hallelujah'. So my guess is early or mid 1969.
Also, I think the tape is running slowly too, the band sound sluggish and the voices are deeper than usual.
Here are some gigs for your list (I was at them):-
    1) October 17th 1971 - Norwich Lad's Club, UK. The 'Historical Figures...' line-up. Support band: Fuzzy Duck
    2)July 21st 1973 - Buxton Pop Festival, UK. The 'New Age' line-up.
3)March 30th 1974 - Rainbow Theatre, Finsbury Park, UK. Support band: Harvey Mandel's Pure Food
4)October 5th 1987 - The Mean Fiddler, Harlesdon, UK. James Thornbury, Henry Vestine, Larry Taylor, Fito de le Parra.
    5) December 3rd 1991 - The Town and Country Club 2, Highbury and Islington, UK. James Thornbury, Harvey Mandel, Ron Shumake, Fito de la Parra
    6) November 19th 1992 - James Thornbury, Becky Barksdale, Larry Taylor, Fito de la Parra
    3)

  6. Thanks SeanKS! I have update my shows list and obviously give you the credit for your help! About "Jamming with Kaleidoscope", maybe you'are right, sounds like 1969 and not 1970, but I don't know, because the bootleg have almost always wrong date or wrong venue or both, so it's difficult now to find the real date and the real venue of when and where this album was recorded.

  7. Hello again,
Sorry about that stray 3) at the end there! And I should have said that the Rainbow Theatre gig on March 30th 1974 was by the 'One More River To Cross' line-up, which was the 'New Age' line-up with three added brass players.
    Some more gigs:-
    7) 20th April 1994 - The Waterfront, Norwich, UK. James Thornbury, Henry Vestine, Junior Watson, Ron Shumake, Fito de la Parra.
    8) February 8th 1996 - The Bottom Line, Shepherd's Bush, UK. Robert Lucas, Henry Vestine, Junior Watson, Mark Goldberg (bass), Fito de la Parra. Support: Vincent Flatt's Final Drive
    9) December 8th 2001 - The Town Hall, Cheltenham, UK. By this time it was just Fito and his mates. Support: Dr. Feelgood, Kursal Flyers, John Otway.
I could list many other dates which I didn't go to because they are listed on tour schedules I've still got.

  9. Great work! - I have a few additions regarding their Danish gigs. The first time they played in Denmark, was in Copenhagen, October, 1968.
Second time was also in Copenhagen at the Falkoner Centret, January, 13, 1970.
Then they came back later the same year, in September, 1970, right after Alan Wilson´s death, and played at KB Hallen.
They also played at the Roskilde Festival, outside Copenhagen, in July, 1974.
They played at, "The Rock", Copenhagen, April,15, 2005.
And the last time they played in Denmark, was at the "Train", September, 2, in Arhus.
I was present at all those concerts, except the first one in 1968.
    Regards, Hans Christensen.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Oops! I forgot to add that the concert in Arhus at the, "Train", was in 2010. Sorry!
The concert in September, 1970, at KB Hallen, was of course also in Copenhagen.

  11. thanks Hans! I have update my shows list and obviously give you the credit for your help!

  12. You´re welcome, Bruno! I see you call the concert at the Roskilde Festival, July, 1974, for "unknown venue". Well, the venue IS the Roskilde Festival, which is an outdoor music festival held outside the small town of Roskilde, 30 kilometers (20 miles) from Copenhagen. The festival has been held every July since 1971 and it´s still going strong.
Also, I think you forgot to list the concert in Copenhagen, October, 1968. I see you´ve listed Sept. 30th as the last concert on their European tour, so maybe the concert in Copenhagen in Oct. was really in Sept. although the review of the concert I have says Oct.
(They also played in Copenhagen in the early 1990´s. I believe it was in 1993, but I´m not quite sure.)

    ReplyDelete
  13. Thanks Hans! By the way, (a) I've already in my list the 1968's two shows in Copenhaghen. The exact dates were September 23-24, but sadly I don't know (for now) the name of the venue, and (b) CH played at the Roskilde Festival on June 29, 1973 not on July 1974.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Sept. 23-24? Thats great!
Roskilde Festival, June 29, 1973, and not July 1974? Sorry about that! I was there but I always remembered it as July 1974. My Bad!

I´ll let you know if I can come up with the Sept. 23-24, 1968 venue. I have a hunch it could be Tivolis Koncertsal, or Falkoner Centret, but I´m not sure.

  27. Greetings -
The May 9, 1970 CANNED HEAT concert(s) were at Freedom Palace in Kansas City, MISSOURI (MO), not KANSAS (KS), and I am fairly certain it featured line-up #3, NOT #4. They played 2 separate performances, an early & late show - it was the first concert at this then-new venue (which only lasted about a year or so). The early show (the one I attended) was very brief (less than an hour), due to the band arriving late to the venue &, while walking to the stage in the dark, Blind Owl dropped his Les Paul, which then took him forever to tune. Friends of mine who attended the later show said they played for 2+ hours and were great.
CANNED HEAT also headlined a concert at Memorial Hall in Kansas City, KANSAS (KS), sometime in the fall of 1969. (I will try to find out the exact date.) Opening act was THE BOB SEGER SYSTEM. This was a fantastic show, featuring the extended "Refried Boogie" in all it's glory.

  28. Bruno,
I usually have my ticket stubs but can't find this one show.
In Gaithersburg Maryland @ a theatre-in-the-round senario(which SUCKED for the band & the music kept in motion throughout the whole show).
Any one trying to record that show got one messed up recording!
I think it was called The Shady Grove (something) Theater.
I don't recall an opening act.
I was a pretty big fan at the time, owning everything they'd put out.
I believe this would've been in 1972 or '73 in maybe in the fall as I was in High School at the time. My girlfriend & I got pretty ripped during the show but somehow got backstage afterwards becuase I had some weed and I distinctly remember Fito was complaining about how bad his wrist hurt & thought it was broken and Bob Hite who told him "just keep tokin' man", it's nothin'!".
I read in the paper the next day that the NYC show was cancled "due to illness in the band". HMMM, maybe a broken wrist on Fito?
    Surely Fito remembers this one!

    Mark Tryon

  32. Hi!

Canned Heat's European tour started on September 4, 1970, just a day after Alan passed away, so they need a replacement very quickly. However it was possible that the band perform the first or two shows without a replacement, and that Joel joined the band only a few days later in mid-September.

    2. Canned Heat played at Bates College in Lewiston, ME on Saturday March 27, 1970 supported by John Lee Hooker.

    3. I have no doubt I was high but I’m equally confident that Muddy Waters played prior to Canned Heat. Prior to Muddy Waters was a relatively popular local band. I recall the “Bear” saying that the band had to borrow a speaker (or some other piece of equipment) from the local band due to their equipment being damaged at landing (presumably at the Portland Jetport).

I don´t know if it´s on your list, but Canned Heat gave a concert at Teatret in Horsens, Denmark at November 2, 2013. The line up consisted of Fito de la Parra, Larry Taylor, Dale Spaulding and John Paulus. It was a great concert and I got to say hello to the band backstage afterward.

  45. There is a show that Canned Heat did in Florida that is not on the list. I was in a band called The Second Coming and we opened for them in Jacksonville Beach, Fl. The Venue was The Jacksonville Beach Coliseum. We had the balls to play and jam on the boogie tune they had out on the radio and the whole band came into the wings smiling and cheering us on. Afterwards we hung out backstage and got to know each other. I had my picture taken with Bear and the whole band. I haven't ever seen it. They tried to talk us into moving to California in Laurel Canyon but we couldn't because we were trying to get our own band off the ground. Not sure the exact date. Maybe someone could find it or figure it out. It would have been near the time Canned Heat played Sarasota, Fl. in 1969 perhaps on the same run. Love to know more about it. 47. Hi Bruno, great site and a tremendous undertaking on your part to try and track down all the Canned Heat shows thru the years. I have 2 additions for your list. I attended both concerts and still have the ticket stubs to verify the dates. Up first is Canned Heat with REO Speedwagon opening on Sunday, may 6, 1973 at Findlay College Croy Gym in Findlay ohio. The next show was in my hometown of Lima Ohio with Canned Heat and Salem Witchcraft opening at Memorial Hall on Jan. 25th, 1976. My sister and I went backstage before the show and met Bob, Fito and Richard and Bob introduced us to Chris Taylor who he said was subbing for Henry until he returned to the band. The guys were very friendly and cordial and it was a great thrill talking to them. The strange thing was my sister and I simply got out of our seats and walked by the side aisle of the stage and walked into a room where the boys were relaxing. No security or roadies anywhere in site! It was almost to easy. Anyway keep up the great work Bruno!

    1. Thanks man! Added the gigs! So guitarist Chris "Morgan" (not Taylor) was already in the band by January 1976? great news because I think that he joined them later that year but if he was already there so I think he joined in 1975.

    1. from my friend Barry himself. Apparently Henry rejoined The Mothers again around July 1966 right after "Freak Out!" was released. I don't know what happened to Elliot Ingber, but Zappa asked Henry to temporarily joined them again for a brief tour (supposedly the one the band did in July 1966 in Maryland, Michigan, Texas and Washington), so Henry asked his best friend Barry to fill in for him in the Canned Heat because the band had a few gigs already booked and Henry was scared that the band would replaced him definitely.

  76. Hi Bruno,
In many place we can read something like this - In the spring of 1968, Wilson, Bob Hite, and de la Parra took a cab whose driver turned out to be Sunnyland Slim. Wilson and Hite convinced him to go in the studio again and cut an album for a sublabel of Liberty Records. The album, Slim's Got His Thing Goin' On featured tracks with Slim fronting Canned Heat and Hite acted as co-producer. Slim thanked them by playing the piano on "Turpentine Moan" for the album Boogie with Canned Heat.
In my opinion the truth is certainly that first they met in 1967 and then they recorded “The World In A Jug” unreleased version w/Sunnyland Slim Piano, 9/18/1967. I have this one on my bootleg from many, many years and it was officially edited on CD THE BOOGIE HOUSE TAPES . VOL3. Probably he played piano on canned Heat session in October 17-18, 1967 RCA Studios, Chicago, IL – this is his sound – edited on CD Uncanned! Best of. And just chronologically they recorded some songs to the album Slim's Got His Thing Goin' On in Oct 24, 1968 Los Angeles, I D Sounds
Let me know what do you think?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. You are right! The story is true that they met Slim in Chicago when he worked as cab driver, but not in the spring of 1968 but actually in October 1967 when they invited him into the studio for the recording of "Turpentine Moan", which was, together with "Evil Woman", the only two tracks on the Boogie With Canned Heat album that were recorded with Frank Cook on drums (although Fito overdubbed drums on both tracks after he joined the band).

About "The World In A Jug", you say it was recorded on September 18, 1967, but by then Canned Heat were in New York City to play at the Cafe Au Go Go, so I think that song was also taken from the October 1967 sessions in Chicago.

There is a San Francisco Chronicle article dated May 2, 1970 that mentions Henry Vestine being back in the Canned Heat line-up. Looks like that line-up change took place
in late April during the lull in touring rather than May 10, 1970. Hope this helps. BTW, I love what you've been doing.

  96. RE: Canned Heat #10

I have a Vancouver Province article dated May 9, 1975 which reviews the previous night’s performance. Canned Heat played the Commodore Ballroom in Vancouver May 8th, 9th & 10th 1975. Your blog lists English venues for those dates. Setlist site has the correct venues. Also, the review mentions Gene Taylor and Chris Morgan being in the band already. I think it’s more likely they joined in late 1974 as Wikipedia mentions.

  97. Hi Vanessa, Thanks for your posts. I am also doing research when exactly Henry Vestine returned. The crisis came after the concert in Chattanooga (Tennessee), at the end of the spring US tour, Larry Taylor could not stand it and announced his departure. When exactly was this concert in Chattanooga ??? while Gene Taylor told me he was in CH in late 1974 and even recorded some songs with the band. rather it definitely wasn't a session of The Record Plant, Hollywood, CA ?, October 11, 1974 (The Harder They come / Rock'N'Roll Show) so maybe the demo recordings in April 1975. Please send me copies of these two interviews from the newspapers you mentioned in your posts. my address is maciejblues@aol.com
