THE STOOGES FAMILY TREE - SHOWS LIST 1967-1974

This story is the work of Bruno Ceriotti. Help in putting this together has been provided by Steve Mackay, Natalie Schlossman, Robert Matheu, Jack LeFelt, Greg Vick, Chazz Avery, Dave F., Bill Ten Eyck, Randy M. Foley, Nick Blakey, John Catto, Bob Davison, Frans, Fifth Estate, The Concert Database, Ann Arbor Sun, Mike Delbusso, Los Angeles Free Press, John Jack Rogacki, Karl Speck, and Bob Smith, to whom I'm most grateful.

UNNAMED REHEARSAL TRIO (EARLY 1967 - SUMMER 1967) / THE PSYCHEDELIC STOOGES #1 (SUMMER 1967 - JAN 1968)
1) James Newell 'Jimmy' Osterberg Jr. (aka Iggy 'The Iguana' Stooge) drums, vocals, organ, piano, hawaiian guitar, 'Jim-a-Phone', blender, vacuum cleaner
2) Ronald Franklin 'Ron' Asheton Jr. bass, guitar
3) Scott Randolph 'Scotty' 'Rock Action' Asheton vocals, harmonica, drums

The Psychedelic Stooges' first private gig was held at the house of their first manager Ron Richardson, who lived next to a junkyard (!!). This was also the only performance of the band as a trio.

The band was billed as 'Iggy & The Stooges' on the poster.

May 12, 1971: unknown venue, Richmond, VA

May 13, 1971: Northport High School, Northport, Long Island, NY
The gig was cancelled at the last minute by the school board, because they were afraid of what might combine Iggy Stooge on stage having regard to its reputation as an "crowd's agitator" (!!).

May 14-15, 1971: The Electric Circus, 23 St. Marks Place, New York City, NY

May 16, 1971: Creelman Hall, University of Guelph, Guelph, Canada
The concert ended much earlier than expected because at one point he was interrupted by the headmaster of this university, because he lived nearby, and could not even sleep through the fault of the loud music of The Stooges (!!). That night also happened that one of the band's roadie drank so much tequila that at some point he lost his balance and fell off a scaffolding that was in the hall.

May 21-22, 1971: Eastown Theatre, 8041 Harper Avenue, Detroit, MI with Illusion, Fanny
The Stooges did not play the first night (21) because a few hours earlier their drummer Scott Asheton was rushed to local hospital after he crashed with the van's band against a bridge (!!). For the second night show (22) the band called back their former sax player Steve MacKay to play drums instead of injured Scott Asheton (!!).

May 26, 1971: The Music Palace, St. Louis, MO (cancelled)
The concert was canceled at the last minute because the band's equipment truck arrived too late. However the concert was postponed for the day after at another nearby city (see below).

May 27, 1971: The Factory. St. Charles (a suburb of St. Louis), MO
This show is the one that many bootlegs are from, and many of those are mistakenly labeled as 'Kiel Auditorium, St. Louis, 1970'. There's a bootleg on the mysterious Starfighter label which purports to be this show (a better quality copy of that tape is circulating through traders). About 35 minutes into the show, Iggy Stooge whacks Ron Asheton in the head with his mic by accident and the gig stops. They come back and try one more but it goes down so the show was over. People were pissed. Iggy comes out into the crowd afterward and hangs out and talks to everybody and was very apologetic.

May 28, 1971: The Tumbleweed Ballroom, 1903 Novi Road, near 13 Mile Road, Walled Lake, MI (cancelled)
The concert was cancelled because the band was still in Missouri after the previous day's above concert that had not been planned originally.

2) Scott Asheton
3) Jimmy Recca
4) Steve Richards vocals

July 24, 1971: Wampler's Lake Pavilion, Walter J, Hayes State Park, Irish Hills, MI with Bull Frog, The Brat Band
The Stooges had already been split up at that point but this gig was originally scheduled some weeks earlier, then the band were contractually obliged to play. Iggy Stooge and James Williamson did not want to take part and so the band went there only with Jimmy Recca and the Asheton brothers, but none of them wanted to sing instead of Iggy and so they asked the audience if there was anyone capable of doing that and then stepped forward this local kid, Steve Richards, who said that not only he coul sing but, being a huge fan on them, knew by heart all their repertoire and imitate well Iggy's voice too (!!).

August 7, 1971: Wampler’s Lake Pavilion, Walter J. Hayes State Park, Irish Hills, MI with Rumor, Tea (canceled)

Tornado Turner first and only gig with the band. At some point during the show Iggy Pop leaped in the audience covered with mayonnaise and dog doo-doo which people had pelted him with (!!). The show was also filming by a guy with a super-8.

During one of the show (8 or 10 or 12 or 13) Elton John making an unannounced onstage cameo appearance dressed from head to toe in a big, furry, gorilla suit (!!). The band was billed as 'The Legendary Stooges Featuring Iggy Pop' on the poster.

January 11-12, 1974: Bimbo's 365 Club, 1025 Columbus at Chestnut, San Francisco, CA with The Tubes
This shows replaced the cancelled Matrix shows on the previous Oct 31-Nov 1, 1973. By the time the band returned to the West Coast in January 1974 for this two shows (two sets a night) at Bimbo's 365 Club, their audience had dwindled, with just a few dozen fans in the seven-hundred-capacity club, all of them clustered around the stage. Joel Selvin was there to review the show for the Chronicle; he remembers that despite the tiny audience, the band was ragged but on the rampage, and that Iggy was as committed as ever. At one point he jumpeg out into the crowd, where-upon a fan pulled his bikini briefs down. The singer shouted a running commentary over the microphone: 'Somebody's sucking my dick, somebody's sucking my dick!'. Finally, bored of the attention, he screamed, 'Give me my cock back, you bitch!' and continued the performance. Selvin wrote up the incident in his review, with heavy use of asterisks. The next day after the story runs Selvin get a phone call from a guy who says, 'That was no girl that did Iggy, that was me and my cousin Frankie!'. A cleaned up recording of this above performance (January 11 or 12) is included in the disc six of the 6CD limited edition boxed set titled: 'The Stooges - Heavy Liquid' (Easy Action Records, 2005). The songs included are: 'Wet my bed', 'I got nothing', 'Head on' and 'Open up & bleed'.

    Haymarket Riot

I still have a photo of Iggy I took from that concert.

  4. Great site - you're missing a show. Prince George Community College in Portsmouth MD, Dec 1973 or Jan 1974. With BOC, opener was the Dictators, playing their first show ever.

  5. Nice site - thanks. There's an error though: the Matrix gigs in SF that were canceled were not scheduled at the Fillmore address in the Marina (that was the original Matrix site). By that time it was the "new" Matrix and was located at 412 Broadway in North Beach.

  6. You're welcome. For what it's worth both venues were in North Beach, with the Matrix pretty much directly across the street from the Mabuhay Gardens, the center of the San Francisco punk scene a few years later (of which Iggy/Stooges were a huge influence, of course).

  7. Hi

Can't seem to find a record of a show I attended at The East Town Theatre in Detroit in November 1970. I was tour manager with the Irish rock band SKID ROW. The Bill was SKID ROW (opening), followed by ILLUSION (from New York)
followed by THE ALLMAN BROTHERS BAND (with Duane) and the show was headlined by THE STOOGES. We did 2 nights which I'm certain were 12th and 13th of November even though these dates are listed on your site as STOOGES / MOTT THE HOOPLE. I'm certain that this is incorrect.

BTW, actually the show where Iggy hit Ron with his mike was at The Factory in 1971, not at the Rainy Daze in 1970 (where Iggy hit with his mike a girl in the audience called Laure Evans)

      Cheers,

  13. I was at the Bimbos show in January '74. There were way more than a few dozen people there since there were up to 12 people at a time at the bar. Iggy seemed rather smacked out. I was about 20 feet away from the notorious blow job scene but wrote it off as a publicity stunt. He did indeed say "Gimme my cock back, bitch!" They did nothing from the Fun house album, and when I asked Iggy to please play "Down on the Street" he just gave me a blank look.

  14. Thanks Bruno, Here's another good story. Chris Huntoon and I went to the grand opening of the Vanity Ballroom to see the Stooges on April 13th 1971. Like the Grande Ballroom, the venue was on the second floor, and we waited in line to get in on the stairs. We got there a little late and had to sit on the floor center stage half way back. Iggy was doing his thing on the floor in front and we wanted to see better. "Iggy's afraid to come more than 20 feet from the stage", I yelled. "Who said that! Who said that!" Iggy yelled into the mic. We were both nervous that someone would point me out and then we would be in for trouble, but the younger crowd sitting around us did not snitch. The next thing we knew, Iggy grabbed the microphone stand, waded out into the crowd, and proceeded to set up right in front of Chris and I! It was a moment in Rock History! Chris even remembers sweat spraying on us as he danced 3 feet away. (Chris remembers Iggy wearing "fairy shorts like a tutu".)The band was playing a new song, a WICKED version of "Who do you Love?", when the rhythm section broke down and the song stopped. Iggy berated the new musicians, and the show degenerated into another practice session on stage.

  17. Feb 9,1974, Michigan Palace. Were you there? I was, but damned if I can find the proof. I was a roadie for Spooky Tooth who played an early set but there is no record of it on their tour schedule. We finished early and needed to move on to our next gig. The Teamsters (bastards as ever) ran the stagehands who would not open the backstage doors for us so we decided to take our backline gear out through the crowd to the front of house where they did not operate. I remember catching sight of Iggy, bare chested and covered in blood from rolling in broken glass. The crowd were really wild, throwing stuff as we dragged our gear through them. I did hear it was going to be the Stooges final show but we could not wait to witness it. I know memory can play tricks but I was definitely there that night. Can anyone remember the Spooky Tooth set? Maybe they were a replacement act for someone else, but I can find no mention of them being there. Anyone remember the Tooth of it? First gig of their tour was at Flint, Mi and there is no record of that either. Years later in London by coincidence my missus designed the cover of Metallic KO for Skydog, including the tasty lettering. Nick Kent who put that album together was round our flat one day when I caught him shooting up in the bathroom and chucked him out of the house.
Good to hear Iggy on BBC6 music show each week. Hope he's not getting too depressed. Very smart, intelligent and funny guy, almost a prophet of our age.

    1. Toledo is only an hour or so from Detroit so Bilge Pimp's memory that Spooky Tooth played an early set and packed up for their next gig while the Stooges is very plausible. The Michigan Palace was a fun venue. The exterior still stands but the interior was gutted and turned into a parking garage. Sad.

  20. The 'unknown club' [1970.Aug.15, Asbury Park, NJ] is the 'Sunshine-In'. The Stooges show was reviewed in the 1970.Aug.17 edition of Asbury Park Evenng Press [page 10], see https://www.newspapers.com/newspage/145250416/

Pop Box - Iggy and the MC5 - by Joan Pikula
ASBURY PARK - You'd think the Sunshine-In*, being one of those "small, intimate" clubs, would be the perfect place for Iggy Stooge to do his thing - which is to throw himself with utmost abandon into the audience (literally as
well as figuratively) and initiate the feeling of oneness he says he's after.
You'd think, too, the MC5 would find the club a perfect setting for its heavy, political, restraint-be-damned pitch.
Neither proved to be true Saturday night when both groups performed before a relatively small, apathetic audience - apathetic, but steadfast, that is. Most of those present had been there from early evening, when a first show was to take place. The first show did go on, but without he Stooges, who were late. So almost everybody stayed 'on, at invitation of the club's owner, Bob Fisher, until the music ground to a reluctant halt around 3am yesterday.
By that time, Iggy had thrust himself into the audience, which was seated on the floor beneath the stage, several times, sending some astonished youngsters scurrying out of the way while others moved closer "getting into the act" - which is what he wants.
Iggy Stooge is a small, muscular boy-man who appears onstage in variations of "stimulating" attire and who then usually proceeds to torture himself while his band, the Stooges, plays wildly behind him. Well, Iggy didn't mutilate his person Saturday night - but that may be simply because the concert was stopped in time by the club's owner.
By 3 o'clock Iggy had thrust his nimble body among the throngs a whole lot of times, discarding the feather boa he wore for his prancing entrance along the way, along with a red leather choker. All that remained on Iggy's sweating body as he offered it up (or, rather, down) to an audience that didn't seem to know just how to react, were a pair of boots and the remains of incredibly shredded jeans.
The Stooges aren't bad musicians. The original band, drummer Scott Ashcton. his brother Ron on guitar, and bassist Dave Alexander, has been expanded with the addition of a tenor sax man (whose name I don't know) who adds a lot of drive to the group.
It could be the Stooges will make it big some day. But, chances are they won't, despite the musical potential they show. The fact is, Iggy is just too freaky for most of today's audiences, and too unsubtle.
Unsubtle might be a good term for the MC5, too. The Detroit quintet, with singer Rob Tyner in front, puts down a steady barrage of 1950's rock 'n' roll music with a political core. When this group first hit the scene a couple of years ago, people thought they really would be something. They had a song called "Kick Out the Jams" which was as strong a cry for overthrowing the Establishment as anything that went before. But, somehow, they didn't follow through.
Today (and they proved it Saturday night), the MC5 is one of the least exciting rock groups around. Its sound is old, not the way Dylan's lately-sound is old, with its sense of roots, but old in an out-of-date sense. And, the truth is. it doesn't even matter what the group is trying to say; the music is such a bore that nobody listens to anything.
Also on the bill Saturday night were Lotus, the house band (which never sounded better) and David Peel, a performer better left undiscussed.

  21. Hey Bruno,

I just finished Total Chaos: The Story of the Stooges, by Jeff Gold. You get a nice shout out at the back of the book for your web sites. Thank you for all your hard work!

Bill W. Ten Eyck. ps, I just bought the postcard for the 10-31-1969 Black Magic show at Olympia Stadium in Detroit, it’s hanging on my wall! Bob Williams and I took the bus downtown and have some fond memories of the show.

  23. Check out Motor City Music Archives, lots of good stuff and a whole section on the Eastown Theatre. We were lucky enough to tour both the Eastown and the Grande Ballroom on December 15th 2012. I got to stand on the Eastown stage for the first time, and realize how close you were to the balconies. The lead singer for Tuckey Buzzard actual sang to my girlfriend Pam Brent while we stood on the stage left balcony projection. Pam had previously written some articles for Creem Magazine. I actually remember where I sat or stood for many different shows.

  24. Bruno, I’ve got several more good stories to discuss with you, but I’ve misplaced your e-mail address. Please e-mail me at steelhead@dmci.net

  25. Here are a couple more stories. I first went to the Birmingham Palladium for the Grand Opening on 11-9-1969. The bands I remember were Catfish with Bob Hodge, Third Power with Drew Abbott, (who later joined The Silver Bullet Band backing Bob Seger), and The Bob Seger System. I was invited by my friend Bob Williams who knew Greg Grant, who had joined Bob and I in taking the bus down Woodward Ave. to the Black Arts festival at Olympia Stadium the week before. Greg worked for Punch Andrews who owned the Palladium, so Bob always got in free, but I had to pay since Greg could only let in one person per night. I remember how young Bob Seger seemed! I was already a Stooges and Bob Seger System fan, but starting that night we became Catfish fans also. I’ll never forget heavily tripping while watching Bob Hodge sway back and forth, his huge belly only half covered by his t-shirt, totally winning over the crowd. I was super impressed as a teenager by Bob Seger’s drummer, Pep Petrine, and his incredible bass drum kit! Look up a picture sometime. The Stooges played the Palladium a lot, and I met my girlfriend Lorry Johnson for the first time outside the club, and we started going steady, and trying to see the Stooges, Third Power, and Catfish as often as we could.
Here is how your memory can get jogged: I mentioned I just finished Total Chaos by Jeff Gold, about Iggy and the Stooges. That led to hearing about an Iggy interview and performance in 1980 on the Tom Snyder show. Iggy was missing a front tooth, was bleeding by his mouth, and seemed pretty high. Tom asks him that he had heard Iggy sometimes threw up on the audience, and had that ever happened? Iggy bashfully confessed yes. That got me thinking, and the floodgates of memory opened up! No, I never saw Iggy throw up on the crowd, but I had seen him throw up two or three times on the stage. In fact, many of the same fans were at the Stooges shows at both the Palladium as well as the Eastown Theatre in Detroit, and we talked about him getting sick, even at shows we did not see. Then it hit me, I used to heckle Iggy by yelling “Iggy throw up!” One of the many times Lorry and I saw him at the Palladium (we were somewhat obsessed fans) I yelled Iggy, throw up, and lo and behold, 5 or 10 seconds later he walked to the back side of the stage by a Marshall amp stack and puked ! Lorry and I just looked at each other as our jaws dropped. I could not possibly make this up!

Coming up later, Lorry and I see a “Special guest” at a Brownsville Station show!

  26. Great stuff.

The 1970 review of The Stooges is very prophetic indeed.
Ig was far too wild for mainstream audiences of that period.
Interesting to read that the MC5 were already deemed out of date
    even by then!

Who would have thought Iggy would have outlived/outlasted every
movement and most of its' prime movers?

    Lou,David,the Ramones,Kurt Cobain....

I saw The Stooges on August 30th 2005 at Hammersmith Apollo.
It was the finest gig I have ever attended. I've seen Bowie, Stones,
Clash, Joy Division, Tom Waits, The Jam, Springsteen, REM,
James Brown, Black Crowes,Jeff Buckley etc.

    They were all superb.

The Stooges were in another league altogether.
Nobody has come even close to that performance, before or since.....

    1. Hey Chuck!

My list is outdated (I will update it asap). Anyway, yes, confirmed, The Stooges appeared on the "Hy Lit Show" on WKBS-TV in Philly on September 20, 1969. They performed two songs: "1969" and "I Wanna Be Your Dog". Sadly the video footage went lost somewhere I guess.
